Abstract

This study examines innovative pedagogical approaches for culturally responsive environmental education focusing on the integration of African philosophical and cultural frameworks. Central to this exploration is the Unhu/Ubuntu philosophy, which emphasises interconnectedness, communal values and respect for nature, promoting a culturally grounded foundation for environmental education. The study introduces eco-humour as an emerging pedagogical tool, pointing its potential to engage students, foster critical reflection and enhance environmental citizenship. Additionally, it examines the integration of sustainable lifestyle education within secondary school curricula, advocating for experiential, contextually relevant and culturally embedded learning strategies. The discussion critically engages with teachers' perspectives on culturally responsive education, outlining both the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing these approaches. Furthermore, the study explores how indigenous pedagogies can be effectively integrated with Western educational frameworks to create a holistic and inclusive environmental education paradigm. Through the advocation of these innovative pedagogical strategies, this study focuses on how culturally responsive teaching can enhance environmental awareness, sustainability practices and the development of eco-conscious global citizens.
