Abstract

This study aimed to identify and prioritize the barriers affecting the implementation of gender-focused educational programs in the Ecuadorian prison system. An exploratory and descriptive design was used, and data were collected from 100 inmates and 10 prison educators in the provinces of Guayas and Pichincha. Semi-structured surveys and interviews were employed, supplemented by secondary data analysis, to identify the most significant limiting factors. The results revealed that the most common barriers were the lack of resources, gender stereotypes, and the absence of trained personnel, which particularly hindered the participation of women and transgender individuals. Based on a Pareto analysis, these barriers were prioritized to guide future interventions. The study concluded with recommendations for implementing inclusive strategies. This work contributes to the understanding of gender inequalities within the prison system and proposes concrete measures to enhance the effectiveness of educational programs.
