The objective of this research is to examine how the development of leadership skills among research project directors at a public university in Ecuador facilitates the achievement of project objectives. Adopting a qualitative approach, the study relies on data collection through document analysis and semi-structured interviews. The analysis aims to identify the social constructs that promote or hinder the development of leadership competencies among directors. The most significant findings indicate that directors with well-developed leadership competencies achieve a structured management of their projects, meeting established objectives and raising quality standards in higher education. It is observed that directors with advanced leadership skills effectively manage project development and motivate their teams toward common goals, ensuring planning and execution within the expected timeframes. The study's conclusions highlight the critical importance of fostering transformational leadership among research project directors. It is recommended to implement strategies aimed at strengthening leadership skills, which could significantly contribute to the success of research projects and innovation within the educational field. Additionally, the need for continuous leadership training is emphasized to prepare directors to face complex challenges and foster a collaborative and productive environment.
