The adequate performance of the community defecologist is a contemporary social need. The article aims to specify the theoretical references that support the professional preparation of the community defecologist in the care of children with severe intellectual disabilities. A descriptive bibliographic review methodology was proposed in which documents from different databases were analyzed; analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive and historical-logical research methods were used. The dissimilar scientific positions systematized on the professional preparation of this specialist revealed the need for a new preparation as a systematic and systemic formative process that constitutes a way of continuous improvement based on the diagnosis of individual and collective needs and potentialities, through theoretical-practical activities, which facilitate the management of knowledge from the professional practice.
