Abstract

This research addresses the importance of history in understanding social, cultural, and territorial development, with special emphasis on Latin America and the particular case of Ambato, Ecuador. The main objective was to analyze how historical processes in Ambato, from the indigenous era to the republic, have shaped the identity and socioeconomic evolution of the territory, considering the impacts of colonialism, indigenous resistance, territorial disputes, and urban transformations. Using a qualitative approach, bibliographic, documentary, and descriptive research were conducted, supported by inductive-deductive and historical-logical methods, to review historical sources and construct conceptual maps that facilitate a comprehensive interpretation of Ambato’s historical stages. The results show that Ambato, throughout its history, has been a space of cultural and political resistance—from the organization of the Kingdom of Quito to its active participation in independence processes and the formation of the Ecuadorian state. The city survived multiple natural disasters and consolidated its importance as an agricultural, educational, and cultural center during the colonial and republican periods, also standing out for its contribution to the construction of national identity. Furthermore, it became evident that history, linked to urban planning and intercultural recognition, is key to facing contemporary challenges such as inequality, segregation, and social exclusion. It is concluded that historical knowledge is essential to design fairer, more sustainable, and inclusive development strategies that acknowledge cultural diversity, reconnect with ancestral knowledge, and strengthen regional identity.
