Victims of domestic violence and their resilience in Ecuador

Unfortunately, today, domestic violence is very common globally and is also present in Latin America and within the region, specifically in Ecuador. Its manifestation and existence are primarily due to sexist and patriarchal patterns inherited from each stage of human evolution. Women are generally the victims, although other members of the family are also at risk. This study's general objective is to identify, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the thresholds for resilience among victims of domestic violence. To develop this research, a mixed methodological approach is used—qualitative and quantitative—and scientific methods such as analytical-synthetic, comparative, and inductive-deductive methods are applied. The results show that all victims of domestic violence have the capacity for resilience, but not all achieve resilience. In fact, all types and manifestations of violence can occur within the family, but psychological violence is among the most common, and this, along with sexual violence, is the type that most demonstrates a difficulty in developing resilience in its victims. These are the most difficult to minimize or erase from their aftereffects. Resilience depends not only on the severity of the violence but also on other factors such as individual capacity and skills, the environment, and recovery. The best results are obtained when there is also family support and professional counseling.
