Gender discrimination and violence against women in the prison system
Abstract
The violation of the human rights of women in prison has been the subject of growing concern in penitentiary settings. Therefore, this study focused on analyzing the violation of the human rights of women prisoners, by identifying the conditions that contribute to their discrimination and the implications of these violations on their physical, psychological and social well-being. To do this, a qualitative approach was used, conducting interviews with five female prisoners. So it has allowed them to explore their experiences and perceptions about the living conditions and the treatment received by prison staff. The results revealed a high incidence of gender violence, discrimination and lack of access to basic services, negatively impacting the physical and mental health of the inmates. Likewise, an absence of information about their rights was identified, limiting the ability to defend themselves. Consequently, this study emphasized the priority of gender-sensitive prison policies that ensure respect for the human rights of female prisoners. It was even concluded that the implementation of education and support programs would significantly improve their well-being, by reducing inequalities within the prison system.
