Adversities in sustainable development for small dairies in Ecuador
Abstract
The Parroquia Julio Andrade has faced problems due to the lack of effective application of the Organic Law that regulates the production and marketing of milk, negatively impacting small producers in the dairy sector. The objective of this study has been to evaluate the impact of the ineffective application of the Organic Law on the small dairies of the parish, with the purpose of proposing actions that improve its implementation and benefit local producers. A mixed approach has been used, using surveys and interviews with producers about current regulations. The results have revealed that small dairy farmers receive prices lower than what is stipulated in the Law, affecting profitability. Furthermore, a lack of state supervision has been identified that has aggravated this problem. In conclusion, the research has shown the need to effectively implement the Organic Law to ensure the sustainability of small dairies. The priority of proposing new regulatory policies that guarantee fair prices and promote the competitiveness of the sector has even been highlighted. So that lines of research are opened on the impact of regulation in other rural areas.
