Caracterización de capitales tangibles en unidades de producción familiar con maíces locales en Chiapas, México.

Abstract

Los maíces locales en la Frailesca, estado de Chiapas, México, son conservados preferentemente por Unidades de Producción Familiar (UPF), las que están asociadas con un modo de vida rural. Estas UPF articulan los capitales que poseen, dentro de los cuales se destacan los tangibles (natural, físico y financiero-productivo) para garantizar su reproducción social. El objetivo del estudio fue caracterizar, desde una perspectiva socio-productiva, los capitales natural, físico y financiero-productivo de las UPF que cultivan maíces locales en cuatro municipios de la región Frailesca, Chiapas. Se utilizó el enfoque de Modos de Vida Sustentables (MVS). La información se recopiló a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y observación participante y se analizó mediante técnicas estadísticas multivariadas exploratorias. Entre los resultados se encontró que el cultivo de maíces locales se realiza a pequeña escala, en condiciones de temporal y en el 67.5 % de las UPF estudiadas se le asocia al menos un cultivo. Se concluye que las UPF que cultivan maíces locales son diversas en cuanto a la disponibilidad de capitales natural, físico y financiero, los que se complementan y se afectan mutuamente unos a otros en el proceso de conformación de las estrategias de reproducción social y conservación de los maíces locales.

ABSTRACT

Local maize in Frailesca, Chiapas state, Mexico, is preferably conserved by Family Production Units (UPF), which are associated with a rural way of life. These FPUs articulate the capitals they possess, among which the tangible ones (natural, physical and financial-productive) stand out to guarantee their social reproduction. The objective of the study was to characterize, from a socio-productive perspective, the natural, physical and financial-productive capitals of the UPFs that grow local maize in four municipalities of the Frailesca region, Chiapas. The Sustainable Ways of Life (MVS) approach was used. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation and analyzed using exploratory multivariate statistical techniques. Among the results, it was found that the cultivation of local maize is carried out on a small scale, under temporary conditions, and in 67.5% of the UPFs studied, at least one crop is associated with it. It is concluded that the FPUs that grow local maize are diverse in terms of the availability of natural, physical and financial capital, which complement and mutually affect each other in the process of shaping the strategies of social reproduction and conservation of the local maize germplasm.
