ABSTRACT

The objective of this work is to highlight to from a social history view, the protagonism of a woman who abiding by gender roles, was able to efficiently fulfill her teaching labor in an agitated sociopolitical context at the end of the XIX century. The Restored Republic pointed towards educational access for women and the positive educative initiatives intended the intellectual elevation of women for the education of children, asking her to surpass her own knowledge, not with the purpose of getting a better position within a social labour market, but to shape men from the family household or to do womenly work. In this context, Juana Ledesma, was accepted into the Liceo de Niñas de Aguascalientes (Aguascalientes High School for Women) and trained herself as a Professor in First Writing. Her incorporation, maintenance and promotion in the working field were combined with her roles as mother and wife for 34 years. The usage of the concept of gender as a category of analysis, allows to identify the roles as wife, mother, sister, provider, teacher and principal, roles that she performed simultaneously and also allows us to identify the positions and implications that women who entered the formal working field had, amongst others, the double working time.
