Evaluation of strategies for the safe disposal of expired and unused medications
Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate improvement strategies for the proper disposal of expired and unused medications among users of pharmacies and pharmacies in the Ica area, Peru. A descriptive, cross-sectional and non-experimental research was carried out, surveying 126 women and 49 men in local pharmacies and drugstores. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data on expired medication disposal practices, medication collection, and sociodemographic characteristics of users. The analysis revealed a lack of adequate medication disposal practices and lack of knowledge of collection programs. Even though more than sixty percent of respondents recognized the dangers of expired medications, the majority continued to practice inappropriate disposal methods. Additionally, an absence of adequate guidance in pharmacies on correct disposal practices was identified. The TOPSIS method was used to prioritize between different improvement strategies. The selected strategies include awareness campaigns, distribution of information guides and improving the visibility of collection programs. These strategies, chosen for their feasibility and cost-effectiveness, have the potential to generate an immediate positive impact. The study provides an advance in knowledge about medication disposal practices in the region and offers a methodological framework applicable to other areas. Future research and community action will be essential to consolidate progress and ensure a safer and healthier environment.
