SWOT evaluation for the conservation of Hedeoma mandoniana in vulnerable habitats of the Peruvian Andes

Abstract

The conservation of plant biodiversity in the Peruvian Andes is crucial in the modern era due to the transformation of a large part of the land surface into urbanized and cultivated areas. This has caused the fragmentation of natural habitats and the decline of plant populations, including the Hedeoma mandoniana species, threatened by overexploitation and population growth. The strategy for its conservation involves in situ methods, such as the preservation of its natural habitat, and reproductive technologies, such as ex situ methods, including vegetative propagation to ensure its production. SWOT analysis has been essential to evaluate conservation strategies for H. mandoniana , identifying weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities. Botanical samples were collected during the months of November to February in the Peruvian Andes and 12 populations were georeferenced, with average altitudes of 4087.85 m.a.s.l. The proposal includes in situ conservation through the identification and protection of these populations, and ex situ conservation in the Centro Unión annex in Huancavelica, using greenhouses to ensure the adaptation of new plants. The research highlights the importance of engaging the local community and using tools such as SWOT analysis to guide conservation decisions. The adaptability of H. mandoniana to extreme conditions is emphasized and its potential medicinal and economic value is underlined. This study provides a crucial framework to address current and future challenges in the conservation of plant species in vulnerable habitats, ensuring a legacy of sustainability for future generations.
