The battle of Venezuelan migrants in Ecuador: overcoming challenges during the pandemic of covid-19
Abstract
This research focuses on the experience of Venezuelan migrants in Ecuador during the COVID-19 pandemic. Venezuelan migration has experienced a remarkable increase since 2015, becoming one of the most significant migratory phenomena in the region. However, the pandemic has exacerbated the inequalities and vulnerabilities of this population. The objective of this study is to analyze how the pandemic has affected the lives of Venezuelan migrants, focusing on key aspects such as work, housing, care and health. For this research, we used a qualitative approach and grounded theory as a theoretical framework. Through semi-structured interviews, the experiences of Venezuelan migrants in different Ecuadorian cities were explored. The results obtained indicate that the pandemic has had a significant impact in the labor sphere, with many facing job loss and precarious working conditions. They have also been affected in terms of housing, with difficulties in meeting rental costs and in some cases, living in precarious conditions. In the area of health, access to medical services and institutional support has been insufficient, further aggravating the situation of vulnerability of these migrants. It was also observed that the pandemic has accelerated the migration cycle, leading some to return to Venezuela due to the lack of opportunities in Ecuador.
