La universidad latinoamericana: antecedentes históricos, situación actual y desafíos

Resumen

La sociedad latinoamericana requiere de un papel más activo de sus instituciones de educación superior en la búsqueda de su progreso y bienestar. El presente artículo resume algunos de los aspectos considerados más trascendentes, en el devenir histórico de la universidad en nuestra región desde sus orígenes. Se estudian varias de las principales transformaciones, que tienen lugar luego del advenimiento de la República en el siglo XIX; destacándose el significado de la Reforma de Córdoba. También subraya la importancia del proceso de masificación de la matrícula universitaria en los últimos 60 años y sus consecuencias. Igualmente, se brindan algunos indicadores de interés sobre ese particular y otros datos que muestran la desfavorable situación actual de la Ciencia en América Latina y el Caribe. Por su valor didáctico, el escrito, describe y valora varios de los antecedentes que dieron lugar al nacimiento de las universidades durante la Baja Edad Media en Europa Occidental y divulga aspectos interesantes de su organización y funcionamiento en esa etapa. Se plantean además, algunos de los problemas más apremiantes que enfrenta hoy la universidad latinoamericana.

ABSTRACT

Latin American society requires a more active role of its institutions of higher education in the search for progress and well-being. This article summarizes some of the aspects considered most transcendental in the historical development of the university in our region since its origins. Several of the main transformations that took place after the advent of the Republic in the 19th century are studied, highlighting the significance of the Cordoba Reform. It also underlines the importance of the process of massification of university enrollment in the last 60 years and its consequences. It also provides some interesting indicators on this subject and other data that show the current unfavorable situation of science in Latin America and the Caribbean. For its didactic value, the paper describes and values several of the antecedents that gave rise to the birth of universities during the Late Middle Ages in Western Europe and discloses interesting aspects of their organization and operation at that stage. It also discusses some of the most pressing problems facing Latin American universities today.
