El alumbrado público de gas como práctica tecnológica en la sociedad cienfueguera (1857-1890)

Resumen

La relación tecnología-sociedad evidencia aún poca presencia en las investigaciones históricas nacionales. En consecuencia, el artículo presentado se propone explicar la integración del alumbrado público de gas, como práctica tecnológica, a la sociedad cienfueguera entre 1857 y 1890. En el proceso investigativo, fue necesario acudir a los presupuestos teórico-metodológicos articulados por la historia social de la tecnología, en particular la noción de Práctica Tecnológica. En la memoria presentada, se identifican los elementos organizativos y técnicos que distinguieron la integración del alumbrado público de gas en la sociedad cienfueguera. Asimismo, se argumentan los efectos generados por este para el proceso de urbanización, la salud y seguridad de los cienfuegueros, la economía y la vida cultural centro-sureña. La base informativa de la investigación está compuesta por fuentes documentales, bibliográficas y hemerográficas ubicadas en instituciones locales, nacionales y extranjeras. El estudio revela su novedad, en primer término, en el orden empírico, a través de los elementos que se exponen acerca del alumbrado público cienfueguero y particularmente el de gas: su despliegue técnico y organizativo en el entorno urbano cienfueguero y sus interacciones con la economía, la política y la cultura. Por otra parte, se ofrece además una orientación metodológica interdisciplinar que puede resultar útil en investigaciones con objetos de estudio afines, que se acometan en lo adelante.

ABSTRACT

The technology-society relationship still shows little presence in national historical investigations. Consequently, this paper aims to explain the integration of public gas lighting, as a technological practice, to Cienfuegos society between 1857 and 1890. In the research process, it was necessary to adopt the theoretical-methodological assumptions articulated by the social history of technology, particularly the notion of Technological Practice. In this article the organizational and technical elements that distinguished the integration of public gas lighting in Cienfuegos society are identified. Likewise, there are also given the effects generated by public gas lighting on the urbanization process, the economy, the cultural life as well as, the given impact on health and safety of the population. The information for this investigation was obtained on documentary, bibliographic and hemerographic sources located in local, national and foreign institutions. The study reveals its novelty, in the first place, from the empirical point of view, through the elements that are exposed about public lighting in Cienfuegos and particularly the gas lighting: its technical and organizational deployment in the urban area and its interactions with economy, politics and culture. On the other hand, it also offers an interdisciplinary methodological orientation that can be useful in investigations about similar objects of study, which could be undertaken in the future.
