Análisis cuantitativo de la procedencia territorial de los jugadores cubanos en las grandes ligas (1871-1961)

Resumen

Hasta la ruptura de las relaciones con el circuito profesional norteamericano, los cubanos constituyeron la mayoría de los latinoamericanos en las Grandes Ligas (Major League Baseball, MLB). Por razones socioeconómicas y del origen del deporte en Cuba, en la presencia nacional prevalecieron peloteros de las provincias occidentales, fundamentalmente los capitalinos. A pesar de que la literatura ha tratado de manera tangencial la influencia del territorio en el desarrollo del beisbol cubano y su presencia en los Estados Unidos, no existen estudios cuantitativos sobre este tema. Aquí se presenta una investigación estadística de la presencia cubana en la MLB en el período 1871-1961. El objetivo principal es obtener evidencias cuantitativas sobre el papel de la región de procedencia en la presencia cubana en la MLB y su evolución en el tiempo. Se estudió la distribución de peloteros por provincias, considerando parámetros como la edad y tiempo de permanencia en el torneo. Se consideró la evolución temporal de la proporción de jugadores capitalinos y el resto del país. Se observa preponderancia de los jugadores occidentales, especialmente de los habaneros; sin embargo, el porcentaje disminuye progresivamente en el período. Se encontró que los peloteros habaneros debutaron 2 años antes, aunque promediaron menos temporadas.

ABSTRACT

Until the breakdown of relations with the North American professional circuit, Cubans constituted the majority of Latin Americans in the Major Leagues Baseball (MLB). Due to socioeconomic reasons and the origin of the sport in Cuba, players from the western provinces, mainly from the capital, prevailed in the national presence. Despite the fact that the literature has tangentially dealt with the influence of the territory in the development of Cuban baseball and its presence in the United States, there are no quantitative studies on this subject. Here we present a statistical investigation of the Cuban presence in the MLB in the period 1871-1961. The main objective is to obtain quantitative evidence on the role of the region of origin in the Cuban presence in the MLB and its evolution over time. The distribution of players by provinces was studied, considering parameters such as age and time spent in the tournament. The temporal evolution of the proportion of capital players and the rest of the country was considered. There is a preponderance of western players, especially of Havana; however, the percentage progressively decreases over the period. It was found that Havana players debuted 2 years earlier, although they averaged fewer seasons.
