Ética y política en el pensamiento sobre la cultura de Raúl Roa García (1940-1958)

Resumen

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo, valorar el pensamiento en torno a la cultura de Raúl Roa García entre 1940 y 1958. Este fue un contexto marcado por los reajustes sociales posteriores a la Revolución del 30, la experiencia democrática de los gobiernos “auténticos”, la afirmación del nacionalismo en el ámbito artístico y literario; y las polémicas en torno a las esencias de la cultura cubana y el rol social del intelectual. En estos debates se insertan las concepciones de Raúl Roa, quien durante este período se desempeñó como profesor universitario y ocupó, entre 1949 y 1951, la Dirección de Cultura del Ministerio de Educación. El análisis de los textos de Roa revela que sus reflexiones en torno a la cultura están estrechamente vinculados a su pensamiento político, y ambos están atravesados por una dimensión ética y humanista, que aflora en sus criterios relativos al carácter popular de la cultura, la necesidad de democratizarla, y la relación entre cultura, libertad y justicia social, así como en favor del compromiso social de la intelectualidad y en rechazo a la neutralidad y apoliticismo de la cultura. Se trata de un intelectual que unió la producción teórica a la práctica revolucionaria, por lo que este estudio pretende contribuir al conocimiento de la tradición cubana de fusión entre pensamiento y acción, desde la obra de uno de sus más conspicuos pensadores del siglo XX.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to assess the thought around the culture of Raúl Roa García between 1940 and 1958. This was a time marked by the social readjustments after the Revolution of 30, the democratic experience of the “authentic” governments, the affirmation of nationalism in the artistic and literary field; and the controversies surrounding the essences of Cuban culture and the social role of the intellectual. In these debates the conceptions of Raúl Roa are inserted, who during this period served as university professor and occupied, between 1949 and 1951, the Directorate of Culture of the Ministry of Education. The analysis of Roa's texts reveals that his reflections on culture are closely linked to his political thinking, and both are crossed by an ethical and humanistic dimension, which emerges in his criteria regarding the popular nature of culture, the need to democratize it, and the relationship between culture, freedom and social justice, as well as in favor of the social commitment of the intelligentsia and in rejection of the neutrality and apoliticism of the culture. This is an intellectual who linked theoretical production to revolutionary practice, so this study aims to contribute to the knowledge of the Cuban tradition of fusion between thought and action, from the work of one of his most conspicuous thinkers of the twentieth century.
